Golden monkeys live in large, noisy troops in the bamboo zone of the Virunga volcanoes, shared between Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. They are considerably more active than gorillas, leaping between bamboo stems rather than sitting still, which makes for a livelier and faster-paced encounter.
The trek is generally shorter and gentler than gorilla trekking, and the permit is a fraction of the price, which makes this an easy addition to a Rwanda or southwest Uganda itinerary rather than a trip built around it alone.
